Trayvon Martin: A Native Sun in the Shadow of the Hood

by Barry Michael Cooper

"Yet man is born into trouble, as the sparks fly upward."

Job 5:7

In the digital buzz constructed by the honeycomb of social networking, the murder of 17-year-old Travyon Martin swells with the poisonous sting of American racism. Until a few weeks ago--before the marches, the rallies, the trending topics, the blogposts, and the page one and lead TV news stories--Trayvon was a young Floridian growing up in Miami Gardens and known only to his family, friends, and classmates. A smaller circumference of people in Trayvon Martin's orbit, who could have never imagined the horror waiting for him on 26 February 2012, inside the gated cul de sac of Twin Lakes, located in Sanford, Fla. Trayvon’s parents--his mom, Sybrina Fulton, and his dad, Tracy Martin--knew their sun beamed with the promise of a bright future. Trayvon was Luke Skywalker in the land of Rick Ro$$. Trayvon rocked a hoodie, but it couldn't hide his shine. Trayvon Martin had a mind and a heart that was built by GOD, and lifted on the wings of his family's love.

It’s no wonder Travyon Martin wanted to be a pilot.

Maybe Trayvon saw a career in the United States Air Force or United Airlines. Maybe he could have been the commander of the first shuttle mission to Mars. However, on the night of 26 February, Trayvon Martin--who had gone to the neighborhood store to buy Skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea during the half-time of the 2012 NBA All Star Game--became an HD Native Sun dimmed by a myopic world obscured by its opaque past, and mired in the quicksand of modern racial hatred. A quicksand vibrating with the thunderous discord of Jim Crow ghost clocks. Many in this country thought those ghost clocks stopped ticking on 20 January 2009; only to be rewound at the shock of seeing an African-American man being sworn into the Oval Office.

The same ghost clocks that tick-tocked inside the brain of one George Zimmerman, a broken 28-year-old man of Caucasian and Latino parentage. The same George Zimmerman, who--despite fervent cries to the contrary--seemed to consider African-American men both “assholes” and “coons”; filthy epithets he whispered into his 911 call to the Sanford police department the evening of 26 February.

The night George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin in cold blood.

Growing up in Manassas, VA, George Zimmerman wanted to be an alter boy, but when his dad Richard, his mom Gladys, and two other siblings moved to Florida, he decided he wanted to be a cop. Zimmerman’s career choice may or may not have been a result of him being the victim of a minor criminal assault back in 2001, according to a recent article in the Washington Post (don’t be surprised if someone leaks a report that George Zimmerman was the victim of a teenage assault by African American men, as if that will be an apologia for the inexcusable).

In 2005, Zimmerman was arrested for an assault on a law officer (he avoided a jail sentence via a pretrial-diversion program, according to the Orlando Sentinel), and a few months later, a woman accused him of domestic violence. In the 15 months prior to George Zimmerman murdering Trayvon Martin, he called the Sanford police department 46 times, reporting on everything from open garage doors, to suspicious people (were all of the suspicious people African-American men?) wandering around the neighborhood. When Zimmerman saw Trayvon in his hoodie (news reports stated it rained that night), he decided to follow this suspicious person, even though the police officer on the 911 call advised him not to do that, and just wait for the police. Zimmerman ignored the officer, followed Trayvon, and then murdered him.

I’m sure Trayvon Martin had no idea that his short, promising life, would have the impact of such a powerful cause celebre'. Citing a story in the Kansas City Star, “Slimm” (as Trayvon was affectionately known) had just turned seventeen on 5 February 2012. Trayvon smiled like a young Denzel and he stood 6’3”. Trayvon worked hard in school. Trayvon played football. Trayvon had no criminal record. Trayvon had a girlfriend. Trayvon loved watching re-runs of Martin on TV One. Trayvon loved his Levi jeans, his Addidas, his Hip Hop and Gospel, and his Issey Miyake smell-good; all of which he got on his birthday.

A birthday which would be a few weeks before Travyon Martin’s funeral.

Trayvon's mother Sybrina said he was a child full of love. Trayvon’s dad Tracy said that Trayvon was his hero; at nine-years-old, Trayvon pulled his father out of a burning house, went back inside the house to get the phone, and came outside and called for help. And now...their sun is gone.
A few weeks ago, Richard Zimmerman wrote a letter to a newspaper, in an effort to refute the idea that his minority Latino son George Zimmerman, was an American racist. I wonder if Richard Zimmerman exercised that same passion to contact Trayvon's parents, with a heartfelt apology and plea for forgiveness. I hope so; Richard Zimmerman's son destroyed their lives, and the lives of the Zimmerman family, too. George Zimmerman has the spellbound gaze of a votary enthralled in the necromantic swoon of revenants from Dixie Land Past; a graveyard of spectral farmers, whose produce is the blood-stained, strange fruit of African-American corpses. George Zimmerman's seemingly overzealous racial phobia (along with the disturbing procedural methodology of the police in Sanford. Fla.), has painted a portrait of a frightened and delusional man who murdered a brave teenage dreamer.

Trayvon Martin is free. No longer will his cries for help--a gut-wrenching scream that hurdled over the Twin Lakes compound and bored deep inside the critical mass of our collective souls--go unanswered, because Trayvon is not crying anymore. Trayvon is flying. Of course, Trayvon left us too soon. Of course, Trayvon’s departure was tragic. Of course, his parents--two of the classiest, most humble, and strongest human beings I have ever seen in the media--miss him, and love him dearly. We all miss Trayvon, because he was one of U.S. Trayvon was my son, and no matter who you are, or where you come from, Trayvon was your son, too. But Trayvon is now and forever navigating with the The Master Pilot. GOD Rest Trayvon's soul, as he glides above the sparks, the hate, the fear, the trouble, above the valley of the shadow of death. Trayvon Benjamin Martin flies far above shadow of the hood; those white hoods branded with a triple "K" logo, illumined by the burning flames of a cross America continues to bear.

"Trayvon rocked a hoodie, but it couldn't hide his shine." What a great way to describe the 17 year-old boy that lost his life to this senseless crime. He is now in a better world that will keep him from the harm that took his life away. He is a symbol of all that is right with the youth, as well as all that is wrong with today's society. May he rest in peace; and may he and his family finally get the justice that they deserve (that we all deserve).

911 call now reveals the screams were from Zimmerman and not the voice of Trayvon...apparently Trayvon attacked Zimmerman and broke his nose...Good thing Zimmerman had a gun to protect himself..

Such Beutiful things to say about Trayvon. My heart is so heavy over this. So sad he had to lose his life, I have not had a moment of peace since. I am a mother raising and African American/Black son. His life was ended because he was labeled, the same label that is given to all Blacks, especially males. It is 2012 and being Black especiall in the U.S. means you cannot drive a nice car without it being stolen, you cannot walk in the rain unless you are up to something, (God forbid if you walk slow)and you cannot belong or live in an affluent neighborhood without robbing it.It saddens me to say: Racism is still very much alive and unfortunately it will not die until the "human race" does. R.I.P. Trayvon.... We Love You and we are all fighting for justice.

Anonymous: If the 911 calls reveals the screams was that of Zimmermans.... why did the screams stop when the gun went off. If you are still hurt and fearing, all you know is you shot, you are not sure if the person is dead.... why would the screams stop.
Those are not Zimmermans screams, those are the screams of a child.
I think you need to listen to the tapes and then make your judgement.

I just feel saddened that our race has been in the background for far to long we need to stop sitting back watching our future fade by our hands and the hands of others.....michael vic goes to jail for r years for killing a dog but Trayvon Martin killer was y home chilling after his death still today weare getting LYNCHED... I dont think clothing defines who u arr as a person and the phone call proves that this man was wrong so where is the justice.....he screamed for help and all anyone could do was call 911 but if it were a person of another race someone would have came out to see what was going on yes its true everyone has their expiration date but nobody deserves to die the way he did and he totally ran away from the person who chased him and killed him after saying these assholes always get away after sayoing he was Black that is what makes it racial!!!!! TEAM TRAYVON...RIP!!!!

On another post someone wrote. "A white kid was doused with gasoline, set on fire and two black males were heard uttering, that is what you deserve white boy. I feel sorry for the child this has happen to but I also have reservations about that. Aren't white people the one who got these type of things happening. They are the ones who would squirt use with water hoses until we drowned, they are the ones who bombed the church that killed those three innocent children, they are the ones who beat Emit Till beoynd recognition, they were the ones who dragged James Byrd Jr. until he became decaitated. So when we look at hate crimes, white people have been committing them for eons and people are just tired now, especially blacks. It is evident that the Trayvon Martin killing had/has everything to do with race, listen to the tapes. In America it does not matter how much money you have, how educated you are or how well you dress, We(blacks) are still considered worthless N!%$ERS to them(whites)
JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON AND ALL OF THE INNOCENT BLACKS ESPECIALLY MALES WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES AT THE HELM OF A PREJUDICE, RACIST BIGOT.

So, was Trayvon's getting kicked out of school and getting a full gold grill of teeth part of his grooming to be the commander of the space shuttle (which no longer exists) mission to Mars?

Deadly force is completely unacceptable, but let's not pretend this kid is the 13 year-old angel you see in the dated pictures. He's a 6'3" 17 year-old football player who was doing what 17 year-old kids of any color do - act tough, show out and get into trouble because it's fun to do so. The ONLY eye-witness report (go on, check the news - it's everywhere) states that Trayvon broke Zimmerman's nose and was slamming his head on the concrete (injuries verified by police and ambulance at the scene). If I was 17 and a creepy dude was following me I might do the same. Unfortunately this guy had a gun and Florida has a terrible law on the books.

Stop inciting racial hatred. Zimmerman was a wannabe-cop buffoon and the Stand Your Ground laws need to be abolished. Aside from that, stop spouting lies and conjecture and let the courts deal with Zimmerman. If it were not for that medieval law, he would certainly go to prison; however, you should brace yourself for the fact that he probably will not. You can't change laws after the fact.

Learn the facts. Learn to be objective. Get on with your life and let the rest of the world do the same.

@Anonymous #6: I agree, it is a sad situation for all parties involved, and you shared some truly insightful feedback. I appreciate it.

Bmc said...

@ Anonymous #7: I agree with you 100%: cruelty inflicted on any human being--be they black, white, Asian, Native American, Latino, gay, straight, whomever--is horrible and unacceptable. The issue of racial prejudice boils down to the sin of pride, and human beings rebelling against the GOD that created them who stated, "For there is no respect of persons with GOD." (Romans 2:11). The founders of this country--who called themselves "Christians"--decided to skip over that in the formation of "Liberty and justice for all." Therefore, we are really struggling here, but we need to remember that we all bleed one blood, and when we shed the blood of another human being, we are spilling our own blood, too. Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I appreciate it.

@BMC, I don't mind that you deleted my posts, but I do mind that you not-so-subtly acuse me of being a racist. Nothing I said was racist, I decried the law that permitted this, and I clearly stated that the picture emerging of Trayvon is no different than most people, myself included, conduct themselves at that age.

Calling people racist is clearly your defense mechanism to every case where you can't get by on your intellect. I see you use it often.

You don't seek the truth; you seek to further your agenda of hate. You're a race-baiter, a coward and an embarrassment to all true writers, journalists and filmmakers - black, white or otherwise.

I wonder why this story has made headlines around the world? I feel the truth is we all see that very little has changed since the days of the civil rights movement. I am a threat because I was born darker than most. I don't have a name, I belong to noone, and the steps I take lead only to harm, hurt or steal from someone else. That's why this story spreads like a wild fire.

I am drawing a little bit of confusion here. I just heard a report where this Zimmerman guy said he was walking back to his vehicle and was attacked from the behind. Zimmerman has also said that Travyvon said to him "Do you have a problem" and he said "no" and Trayvon said "well you do now" and punched him in the face. Okay in that 1 minute window gap that is missing.... was he attacked from the back or was he confronted face to face, it is not possible to do both at the same time.
Known facts from 911 call, phone records etc.... 7:09 Zimmerman calls SPD to report a "suspicious" black person, that call lasted approximately 4 minutes and 5 seconds. This would bring you to 7:13, a minute prior at 7:12 Trayvon is connected with his girlfriend which during this call he tells her someone is following him. Trayvon stays on the phone with her for 4 minutes(his cell phone records prove that)this brings you to 7:16, SPD said they arrived at 7:17 and found Trayvon dead. So in that one minute window, are you telling me that Zimmerman was walking back to his car, Trayvon ran to him, attacked him, ran back away from him, Zimmerman chased him tackles him, they wrestle some more then he shoots.... Not likely, why? because one of the 911 callers (a female)called when she heard Trayvon screaming for help, that lasted for 45 seconds and then you hear the gun shot.... there is that infamous minute that is the gap. I am not a detective and I was able to piece the time line together, why can't they.

@ Anonymous said...I am drawing a little bit of confusion here: If some of the public would take the time--like you have so carefully and logically--to look at this outside the bounds of personal prejudice, and in terms the right or wrong of this situation, then this picture of injustice would not be so skewed. Thank you for your great feedback. I appreciate it.

Just the fact that other folks get what it is like on a daily basis to fear for the life of your child is amazing.
I thank young Trayvon and his family. Grace and Class in action. Trayvon was/is a light for the darkness that has become our country. He is still shining and his death demands that we all examine our own selves, each and every one.
Appreciate your post-be blessed and keep Trayvon's family in prayer.

I love this, I am white and I grew up in the hood, I've lived around every race, and this guy that shot tryvann is just one of the narrow minded idiots we have in this world. If you see anyone in a hoodie how is that suspicious I wear a hoodie often does that mean I should get shot? Sometimes I don't understand how people can trat another person like that!

The unsurprising reality is that southerners dont.like black people. Yet they rely on the NCAA Final Four.to enjoy the land.of.santorum in new orleans next weekend. Hundres of."diverse companies" bring their company meetings to Florida bringing billions of $ to the state. It seems the convention sales people arent racist or homophobic, yet the.voters overwhelming scream their prejudices from behimd the.voter.booth curtain. The best way to fix.these hillbillies is to get.them in the pocket book and boycott tourism and corporate meetings to these cities who have laws, like inFL, that uphold the right to bring your weapon to work. Should make you think twice about.bitching out the front desk clerk for your view of.the.garbage.dumpster. The south has risen again. I say this time we let them go.

I am sure George Zimmerman wasn't a racist. He just used racists words. It's amazing how his father, Robert J Zimmerman, his mom, Gladys Desintonio Zimmerman, or his sister, Grace Zimmerman has not tried to send out an apology to Trayvon's parents. It is so sad. Authority makes it racist when they continue to insult our intelligence, by subjecting us to lie after lie. The arrest is taking too long.

@Anonymous said...I am sure George Zimmerman wasn't a racist. But I don't know. Only GOD Knows those things for sure. I feel sorry for Trayvon's family, and the Zimmerman's also, and I want to believe Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman have reached out to Mr. Tracy Martin, and Ms. Sybrina Fulton. I think Mrs. Zimmerman's heart is breaking, too; what mother wants to emotionally ingest that her son murdered someone is cold blood? GOD Bless help and bless both families, and GOD Bless and help us--all of U.S.--as a nation. Thank you for your feedback.

I enjoyed your stream of consciousness good sir, but you seem to jump to way too many conclusions. I'd like to know all the facts before pointing fingers at anyone and unfortunately we'll only get half the story. My gut tells me Zimmerman is guilty of muder (1st/2nd degree? premeditated?), but this sleaze bag has a chance to walk away scott free. What a shame. Enjoyed reading otherwise.

U know what's messed up? I watched Nancy Grace last night. And on there she had the recording of the 911 call, anytime U dial 911 from the dial that second 1 regardless if the phone picks up or rings u are recorded, As the phone for 911 was ringing or whatever, u could hear Zimmerman saying, "fucking coon fucking coon fucking coon" it's disgusting. I am a PROUD WHITE AMERICAN FEMALE. I was raised to be leery of all other races. My mother was raised that way. When I was old enough to make descions for my self, I realized the way I was raised WAS WRONG. To make the long story short, I asked my mother some years later as she came home from having Cofee w/ a black friend (that's her idea of fun, hey to each his own :) and asked her when she started liking "anyone who wasn't white" (u have 2 understand we didn't see e/o for years) she said, "I didn't know any better, that's how I was raised, my mother was raised that way, her mother was raised that way, times have changed, I didn't know better, but when I started to be my own person and got away from ur dad (( raised same way)) I started to know better and when you know better u do better" she apologized and said I can't believe I judged ppl b/c they had a different color of skin.
What my point in is in all this, although we were raised this way, no name calling such as "coons" or the N word was EVER used" we were just taught to be leery and make communication as short as possible, I always knew something was wrong with that. Why? B/c she or he is darker.? Regardless, is still racism. And hearing that last night made me so angry b/c ppl like my self who grew up and was able to make choices my self, hence married to my fine handsome african american husband, and the people who aren't or didn't grow up the way I did I fear some African Americans might hold that against us. I really do. B/c look at the way I grew up. No name call but be nice and get away as soon as possible etc.
I am glad that all races particpated in the wear a hoodie day. I am crying telling my story I will come back and finish if I don't hit post I prob. won't later.

As the author of this site says, we are all one, I agree, HOWEVER, obviously not everyone does.. Cough.. Zimmerman... Ur story just proves their is hope and old dogs can learn new tricks. (No PUN INTENDED) I always try 2 give ppl the benefit of the doubt and think 2 my self, well what's the other side of the story. I CAN'T IN THIS CASE! That is horrible. Speaking of Nancy Grace, I been keeping up on this story and all shows I watch, u know they tri (sp) the case on TV and all defense attornies are having a hard time siding with Zimmerman. C'MON casey anthony, o.J. U get what I'm saying? This is bad. I feel for Tray's parents. I have so much respect for them too.
Pardon my ignorance, pardon my ignorance if I use the wrong terms. I can tell ur an educated man so therefore I feel comfortable asking you this but again pardon my ignorance. The new "black panthers group" Some say they are associated with the original BP group that startyed in the early/mid 1900's, some say NO. Do you know sir?
As much as I hate what Zimmerman did was horrible, I don't think offering a bounty is right.
Here's Why;
1. Shoot, 2 easy, aside from the bounty, I don't believe in the death penalty, it cost tax payers more and it's 2 easy. Let the person live w/ the fact that he did what he did. I believe in God, he works in mysterious ways. He may say he don't care (who ever in this case) but I think God will nalke sure he cares. Easy way out, I'm thinking if I ever had to go 2 jail
4 life or even 20 yrs, my goodness I would beg 4 the death penaly. Why? IT's Jail! Therefore, I wouldn't want someone 2 have it. Suffer.

2. I see the black panthers changed the bounty pic on their site 2 $10,000 REWARD for (legal) citizen arrest. Okay, but, take Zimmerman where? Or is that the hidden catch? To them? There has 2 be a warrant in order for the (twisted, corrupted, defunct ) police department 2 take him from the citizen arrest.
3. I hope they aren't using this case 2 get "$publicity$"

Sorry for the typos, I'm on a blackberry and these keys are so small. I wanted 2 submit a comment which I rarely do but it's nice to see someone with a site who actually is educated/smart/respectable.
Yes, it's jarring as the layers uncover.
-wanna be cop
-police dept. Flunkie
-arrest as mentioned here
-magistrate hook up
-previous arrest
-TOLD NOT 2 FOLLOW
-Did I say f'n coon on 911 tape (I say ignorant bas...you are Zimmerman it takes so much energy to hate)
Then the tear Jerker
Poor kid was buying some skittles.
Then we learned if obama had a son, he would look like tray.
Hey, I kinda hope Tray did whoopp his a.. Sounds horrible but that poor baby is dead.

Love spike lee (how I found this site) but man.. Not cool making sure that was Zimmerman's address. He tweeted what he thought was his address and it wasn't and an elderly couple was forced out 2 live in a hotel. Get this. Instead of the police offering to help or protect, they told them they should leave. Smh (shaking my head)

Off topic,
Sir, did u watch Game Change on HBO? It's about the behind the scenes of Palin/McCain campange. Thank you God for Obama!
If u have not, please watch. It's on HBO every night. It's a 2 hour movie. Tonight 11pm eastern Tomorrow 11pm ea. Next Day 10:15pm ea.
Would like you to doa re-cap and hear your thoughts because with Palin would of been VP my goodnes.. Uh...I won't go there.

Awe, I like your "load of crap" site sir. :) will be reading more. To the people who call this site "load of crap" that's a typical statement of someone when they are lost for words when truth is told. To the others, The author is NOT spreading racism, he is merely bringing attention that it exists still in the freaking 21st Century. My husband just asked, do u think racism will ever be a thing of the past"? Sadly I said no, but can only hope it will be a thing of the past. To the person who said you are no one, I get what u were saying BUT HONEY U ARE SOME, don't ever forget that. We can't help or dwell the facts from the past. I can't help G. gr8 grandmother was a slave, or my neighbor's Great Gr8 grandfather was a slave owner possibly and segragation happened in the 60's it angers me, but I can't hold on to it. I forgive but won't ever forget. I know I wasn't alive when my G Gr8 grandmother was a slave for those of u who may say.
Sadly, Tray's parents lost a son and sadly the world (hopefully) is waking up, stop the hating all the way around.

As the author of this site says, we are all one, I agree, HOWEVER, obviously not everyone does: I agree about the New Black Panther Party's bounty. That is a mistake. A skewed as the law can be, I think justice will win in this case. Most importantly, forr Trayvon's family, and also for George Zimmerman, because at the end of the day, his dad was a judge, and I believe he respects an unfettered due process of law. I believe that. And last but not least, we as a country need to see due process conducted with unfettered and unbiased jurisprudence. And GOD Willing, I hope we see just that. Thank you for your feedback.

Hopefully the truth comes out, and if Zimmerman did kill him just because of his skin color then justice will be served. I am caucasion and dont judge anyone by their race, judge a person by their character. I just wish more people were educated and didn't treat people different because of the color of their skin. Being racist just shows how stupid and ignorant you are, and that goes for whites, blacks, asians Hispanic
