CNN-Tony Harris Reports; Failing To Educate Black Males

(Post written by Sydney McIntosh, CNN Associate Producer)

Another huge problem facing America's public schools, a new study on black males in public education titled "Yes, We Can" shows that only 47 percent of African American males graduate from high school compared to 78 percent of white male students. The study also looks at possible solutions to closing that gap. I dig a little deeper into this problem with John Jackson, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, the organization that conducted the study and Geoffrey Canada, who heads the Harlem Children's Zone. I am a teacher. I work in the field of Early Childhood Education. I find it interesting that not one mention was made of the parents role in this problem. They are the first teachers. They are the people who are the role models and the ones who have to set the foundation.

I could write a book on the subject of how this problem begins to formulate from what I've observed and dealt with in my classroom. How we handle our males is a real source of irritation to me personally. I sincerely believe that this is the real root of the problem. The mindset that many of us use to parent.

I also believe that many of the first teachers are in need of an education. I've had children whose parents have been as young as 13 when they gave birth. Which is a problem within itself.

What really bothers me about this is the fact that the teachers and government is being held as the total solution-but without holding parents accountable the problem will not be resolved.

@msladydeborah: Amen to everything you said! It begins at home, and babies making babies-babies who don't know any better themselves--compound the problem. You sound like a dedicated and inspiring teacher. Your students are Blessed to have you as their teacher.
